Introducing our new pets - 9 Reasons to Adopt from an Animal Shelter!

Last month we welcomed two furry siblings into our home. The pair was rescued by Dýrahjálp (animal help), among 80 other rabbits that were being bred for human consumption. Sadly, due to bad treatment and degeneration, only 4 survived after the rescue.

We never knew rabbits could make such lovely pets! They are litter box trained so they are free to roam the apartment as they wish when we're home. They are literally inseparable, they never go anywhere with out the other! It took some time for them to get used to their new home, but now they act like they own the place. These delicate creatures are actually quite smart, so training them is easy but can take some time. It's all about rewarding them for good behavior, and patience. It's all worth it when they come to cuddle and give you little bunny kisses! Adorbs!

9 Reasons to Adopt from an Animal Shelter

1. You save a life.
All animals at shelters are in need of a second chance. They have been lost, given up or abandoned. They are all unwanted and helpless. You are giving them a new life in a loving home.

2. You help break the cycle of pet overpopulation.
There are not enough homes for all the animals that are born every year. Adopting from a shelter helps weaken the pet overpopulation cycle. Each year 8 to 12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them.

3. You help stop cruelty in mass breeding facilities.
Throughout the world, thousands of commercial pet-breeding facilities and backyard breeders produce millions of animals for sale in pet stores and through newspaper ads. These facilities repeatedly impregnate female animals that spend their entire lives in cages without human companionship. These unfortunate animals are often in intolerable environments, forced to produce litter upon litter, and are destroyed after they become unprofitable assets. Adopting a shelter animal means you don’t support such cruel practices.

4. You take advantage of adopting an adult animal.
Adult pets are great! Often they are already housetrained! You won’t have to deal with the young faze which means less of that youthful energy such as biting, chewing, clawing, etc. You will be able to see the personality of the adult animal and won’t have to wait to see what you get.

5. You get a lifetime resource with shelter employees and volunteers.
People who work at the shelter will be a great resource to help you find information or resources for your pet. Staff members work with animals every day and have a wealth of information on many different issues.

6. You adopt a pet who has received good care.
All animals that come to good shelters are admitted by experienced staff and are given vaccinations and health care upon arrival.

7. You support a valuable charity and community institution.
When you adopt a pet from a shelter, you assist a not-for-profit organization, but also send a message to others who will be asking you for years to come where you obtained your adorable pet. Shelters improve the community by mandating that adopted animals be spayed or neutered. This requirement diminishes chances that more unwanted animals will enter the world.

8. You pay less.
Low adoption fees (which cover a portion of our shelter’s costs) are much less than the cost of purebred puppies/kittens/pets sold for profit.

9. You encourage others to adopt animals from shelters.
When your friends ask where you got your amazing pet, you can tell them “at the shelter.” Your adoption may encourage others to do the same.

Practical tips to feel better when you're sick

This is our fourth day sick at home. But we're making the best of it with delicious comfort food and good movies. It started out real healthy as you can see on the picture above... and theeeen we just gave in and ordered a lot of pizza and fries.

For common, acute (short-term) illnesses like the cold and the flu, there are some things you can do to make yourself feel better. While you’ll still have to let the illness run its course, you can at least make things a little more bearable with some practical tips.

Stay hydrated. This will help to replace any fluids you lose due to your illness, and ease congestion.
Drink warm beverages and/or soup. It can provide relief from a host of symptoms (including coughing, sore throat, and congestion). The warmth will also provide instant comfort.
Let getting better be your top priority. The more attention you can give to taking care of yourself, the better the chances that you’ll get well soon.
Get lots of sleep. Take frequent naps when you are trying to feel better or make sure to get an 8 hour sleep.

And last but not least, eat a lot of pizza. Haha, not really, eating healthy is very important for the body to heal faster, but we do try to make the best of days like these by pampering ourselves a bit. Even if it means postponing our healthy new year for a few days ;)

What do you do to take care of yourself on day's like these?

Experiencing the best of Hvalfjordur, Iceland

  • Published in Travel

December is always a busy month, so taking time to relax and unwind is crucial. We had the privilege of being invited to stay at Hotel Glymur in Hvalfjordur, only an hour away from Reykjavik, and we seriously fell in love with the place.

The hotel is placed on top of a hill with a breathtaking view over the ocean and mountaintops, and has hot tubs outside to enjoy the view or go stargazing in at night. So in the night we enjoyed a delicious three-course meal and then went out to the hot tubs to enjoy the stars (no northern lights this time, although they do offer wake-up calls if they should appear). In the morning, we enjoyed the generous breakfast spread, took in the hotel's view one more time, and then took a drive through the fjord.

It’s a spectacular area to explore and enjoy. The landscape of Hvalfjordur is varied and beautiful, wide areas of flat land along with majestic mountains, green vegetation in summer and beaches cut with by creeks and rich in birdlife. The area has further been well planted with forests. Among natural attractions is Iceland's highest waterfall, Glymur in Botnsdalur, in the river Botnsa and plenty of interesting hiking trails in the area.

I hope most of you get the opportunity to visit someday, it’s a lovely place to enjoy great food, relaxation and the beautiful Icelandic nature. Thank you for having us Hotel Glymur!
