Self love & self care has been on my mind lately. I've been feeling more tired than usual, so I've decided to be more intentional to take time to nourish my mind, soul and body. It's something that I know to be so important, but is so often forgotten in a busy schedule.
The thing is, we can only love the person in front of us as much as we love ourselves (Mt 22.37-40), and we only accept the love we think we deserve. So, how much we love ourselves will determine how we treat others and how much love we allow ourselves to recieve!
Self-care comes in many different ways and means something different to everybody.
Here are a few things that I have found helpful on how to show myself LOVE. Feel free to take the ones that speak to you and ignore the rest.
Write down a truth you want to remind yourself of regularly on post-it stickers and put it on your mirror. Examples: "I am beautiful. I am loved and accepted just the way I am. God is good and he is with me. Good things are coming my way."
Take a hot bath. Bubbles, bath salt and soothing music is always a win.
Write in a journal. Write anything that calls you. Ideas, experiences, dreams, frustrations – get them out of your head and down on paper.
Treat yourself. We struggle to be disciplined, especially with money and food. You deserve a reward, right?
Create something. Create some artwork. Write something. Build something. It can be functional or frivolous – as long as you enjoy the process.
Buy something nice for yourself. We all love gifts, so give one to yourself!
Learn to say no. Your feelings and time is valuable. Set boundaries to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Light candles and incense. Your sense of smell can create strong memories. Find scents you love and enjoy them.
Claim some space for yourself. A place where you can go to have a quiet moment to read a book, or meditate, or cry – somewhere that you can get some peace and privacy.
Go for a walk. Feel the breeze. Breathe the fresh air. So good!
Go to the spa or pamper yourself at home.
Turn off your phone for a while. It’s not healthy to be accessible 24/7.
Do something that’s only for you. Remember that hobby that you used to have time for? Or that food that no one else in your house likes? Reclaim it.
Curl up with a hot cup of something and a good book.
Declutter and make your home a haven. Your home should be a place where you can take a breath and really relax.
Take yourself out on a date. Go to your favorite spot, just for you.
Put some “me time” on your calendar. When life gets busy, doing things for yourself is often the first thing to be sacrificed. So, actually block out time on your calendar.
Self love is one of the foundations of living a happy, healthy life. This may sound simplistic, but it is also true. Find ways to honor yourself today and everyday.
